What to Expect

How does the rehabilitation process work?

A comprehensive rehabilitation program involves many services from an interdisciplinary team of professionals with the expertise to fully support your treatment. The rehabilitation team for every patient is different depending upon your specific needs and goals. We gather together team of experienced professionals from many areas of treatment — called an interdisciplinary care team — to provide the innovative care you need to improve your health and daily functioning. The team will guide you and your family through the entire rehabilitation process from admission, to treatment, to transition and discharge.

What is life like at Special Tree?

The best rehabilitation outcomes happen in an environment where people feel well cared for and safe. That’s why our highly trained staff are committed to providing you with fabulous everyday care every day. We do our best to keep the atmosphere warm and inviting so you feel at home during your stay with us. We have activities, shared meals in the dining room, and encourage visitors to spend time with you in your room, in our common areas, and even outdoors on our campus grounds for patients where that is medically possible. Our housekeeping and dietary teams work together to ensure you enjoy a clean, safe, nurturing environment for your rehabilitation.

Can I personalize my room?

We want you to feel comfortable in your room and encourage you to customize your space. Each room includes a bulletin board especially for displaying personal items. If additional wall space is needed, we recommend using removable hooks, available from the Activity Team. Special Tree takes measures to maintain and safeguard clients’ personal items; however, we cannot be responsible for any loss or theft. As such, we recommend you keep valuable items at home.

Do you have activities or events?

Recreational and leisure activities are an important part of every person’s life. Our Activities Team strives to provide each client with something enjoyable and fun to look forward to each day. Group activities are offered seven days a week and a monthly activities calendar is posted in every room.

Throughout the year, Special Tree plans many special events and celebrations for clients and their circles of support. Some of these events include Winter Fest, musical guests, Holiday meals, themed parties, etc. Event flyers are posted throughout the NeuroCare Center and included on the monthly activity calendar.

Does my family need to take care of my laundry?

The housekeeping team will launder your personal clothing. An inventory will be done when you arrive and all clothing will be labeled with your name to minimize the chance of anything being misplaced.

Your family members are welcome to wash your clothing. We ask that they provide a basket and pick up laundry daily.

If your family members bring new clothing and personal items, we ask that they be labeled so that we can do our best to ensure your belongings remain with you and in your room.

Can my pet visit me?

Visits from family pets are welcome at Special Tree. We respectfully ask they be up to date on vaccinations and grooming, and of good behavior and temperament. Please provide a current copy of vaccinations to the Activity Director prior to bringing your animal on campus. Pets must remain leashed and in the designated visiting area, and we ask that you clean up after your pet. Depending upon our current staffing and safety protocols/precautions, visits with pets may at times be limited to outdoor areas.

Pet therapy is routinely scheduled through an outside agency. All animals are screened by a veterinarian and every effort is made to ensure the animals pose no danger to clients. All clients are offered the opportunity to see the animals and are welcome to decline if they wish.

What are your visiting hours?

Friends and family are always welcome to visit. For the safety of our clients and staff, visitors need to sign in and out at the Nurses Station and follow any current safety protocols. We recommend that people visit between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

You can learn more on our Visitor Information page.

How long is a typical stay at Special Tree?

This is a difficult question to answer because each person’s recovery depends upon so many factors including the severity of injury, age, medical complexity, health and fitness, motivation, support, and more. Some clients stay at Special Tree for a short period of time such as 60 or 90 days while others spend several months or transition from active rehabilitation into our residential program for longer stays. Our team will do our best to help you define realistic goals and identify steps and milestones to help you achieve them. The goal is always to help each person increase independence, improve function, and move to the least restrictive environment possible.

What are your practices regarding ethics and confidentiality?

Special Tree is committed to the highest standards of integrity and ethical principles in the delivery of services to our patients and in our professional, community, and business relationships. We work hard to prevent unethical conduct through education and example. We also have procedures for the enforcement of an agreed-upon set of ethical standards. If you or your family members have any concerns in this area, please contact your Case Manager immediately.

Special Tree adheres to the regulations required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). These regulations, along with Special Tree policies and procedures, maintain your confidentiality and protect your private health information, and more.

Patient Rights + Responsibilities

What are my rights as a patient?

Your Case Manager is available to address any concerns that you or your family may have regarding your rights and responsibilities.
